Dogs and cats may have an increased requirement if the function of the exocrine pancreas is impaired or lost(pancreatic insufficiency), if metabolic activity is reduced due to age, and to support digestive function and intestinal health, especially in the case of food intolerances.

Pancreas
Pancreatic glands from pigs contain all the digestive enzymes, including lipases, proteases and amylases, required for optimum nutrient digestion of the dog food when prepared gently. In uncoated form, they develop their enzymatic activities in the feed itself and ensure complete digestion of the feed extracorporeally and throughout the entire digestive tract. The partial breakdown of some enzymes during passage through the stomach has no practical relevance when administered in high doses.

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) and folic acid
Current studies in dogs and cats show that despite IF deficiency, a significant overdose of cobalamin leads to passive (paracellular) absorption of sufficient amounts of vitamin B12 . As vitamin B12 is very important for folic acid metabolism , folic acid supplementation could be useful in cases of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Allergic food intolerances
If pancreatic insufficiency and immunologically induced feed intolerances occur at the same time, supplementary feed should also be as hypoallergenic (h. a.) as possible and avoid the most common triggering antigens. These include wheat, yeast, chicken and beef proteins, and possibly certain feed additives. In contrast, immunological reactions to potato starch and traces of pig protein, which are unavoidable when using pork pancreas, are extremely rare.
