Insect protection is an important aspect of horse care, especially in the warmer months when insects such as flies, midges and horseflies can be a major nuisance for the animals. Depending on how sensitive the horse is to insects, they can also be very annoying for the rider and hinder the horse's concentration and performance.
The following products can be helpful in the fight against annoying insects on horses:
-
Fly rugs: Fly rugs are specially designed blankets that protect horses from flies and other flying insects. They cover a large part of the horse's body and offer protection against bites and stings without the use of chemicals/potentially irritating substances.
-
Fly sprays: There are a variety of fly sprays and insect repellents designed specifically for horses. These sprays can be applied to the horse's coat to protect it from annoying insects. For sensitive areas and sensitive horses that are afraid of sprays, there are also special gels that can be applied with a sponge. Conveniently, some of the insect sprays can also be used for the rider themselves, as unfortunately we humans are not spared insect bites either.
-
Insect repellent for the stable: In addition to protection outdoors, it is also important to protect the stable area from insects. This includes, for example, fly traps or other methods such as diffuser sprays to reduce insect populations in the stable.
-
Fly masks: Many horses are particularly annoyed by insects in the head and ear area, causing them to constantly shake their heads. Special masks and ear muffs can be used to protect the horse's face and ears from flying insects. Depending on the model, these can be worn both in the pasture and when riding.
-
Insect repellent from the inside: There are also herbal-based food supplements, for example, that can help to make the horse less attractive to insects. This alone probably helps in very few cases, but can be a good support together with external measures.
-
Other measures: In addition to the products mentioned, there are other precautions that can be taken to protect horses from insects, such as removing standing water near the stable, as this can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes. This is often only possible to a limited extent, but it can still be worth thinking about whether something can be optimized in the area.
Please note that some insect repellents may not be suitable for all horses or may cause allergic reactions. It is therefore advisable to speak to a vet or an expert in horse care before using certain products.
Overall, protection from insects is important to ensure the well-being of horses (and riders) and to protect them from potential illness or discomfort caused by insect bites.
