Chicken feed
Chicken feed is an important factor for the health and performance of chickens. There are different types of feed that should be adapted according to the age, breed and housing of the chickens.
Some general tips for choosing and feeding chicken feed are:
Composition
Ensure a balanced composition of protein, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins. Too much or too little of any one nutrient can lead to deficiency symptoms or obesity.
Fresh food
Avoid feed that contains mold, vermin or foreign bodies. These can make the chickens ill or injure them.
Water
Always offer the chickens fresh, clean water. Water is essential for the chickens' digestion, egg production and temperature regulation.
Needs
Take into account the needs of the different age groups and breeds of chickens. Chicks need more protein and energy than adult chickens, laying hens need more calcium for shell formation than broilers, bantams need less feed than large breeds, etc.
Variety in feeding
Offer the chickens variety in the form of green feed, fruit, vegetables or grains. These can have a positive influence on the chickens' health, well-being and behavior.
Feed the chickens regularly and in appropriate quantities. Too much feed leads to wasted feed and obesity, too little feed leads to hunger and stress.
