Too thin

Severely Underweight

• Ribs, backbone, hip bones and all bony prominences are clearly visible from a distance.
• No body fat is detectable.
• Obvious loss of muscle mass.

Very thin

• Ribs are easily visible with short hair; backbone clearly visible with minimal muscle mass.
• Pronounced tummy tuck; no palpable body fat.

Thin

• Ribs easily felt beneath a minimal layer of fat; backbone clearly defined.
• Waistline clearly defined beneath the ribs; minimal fat deposits on the abdomen.

Ideal

Slightly Underweight

• Ribs can be felt beneath a minimal layer of fat.
• Waistline slightly defined beneath the ribs, marked tummy tuck.
• No layer of fat on the abdomen.

Ideal Weight

• Well-proportioned, with a visible waistline below the ribs. Ribs can be felt beneath a thin layer of fat.
• Minimal fat deposits on the abdomen. Ribs can be felt beneath a minimal layer of fat.
• Waistline slightly defined below the ribs, with a noticeable tummy tuck. No layer of fat on the abdomen.

Overweight

Slightly Overweight

• Ribs can be felt beneath a layer of fat that is slightly too thick.
• The waistline and a layer of fat on the abdomen are visible. Tummy tucks slightly upwards towards back legs.

Markedly Overweight

• Ribs are hard to feel and see under a thickened layer of overlying fat.
• Distinct pads of fat can be felt along the lower back and at the base of the tail.
• Waistline absent or difficult to see.

Obese

• Ribs are very difficult to feel under a very thick layer of overlying fat.
• Chunky pads of fat can be felt along the back and at the base of the tail.
• Waistline is absent.
• Tummy bulges outwards and may sag downwards.

Clinically Obese

• Ribs are impossible to feel with a marked layer of very thick overlying fat.
• Very chunky pads of fat can be felt along the back and at the tail, as well as around the neck and legs
• Waistline is absent.
• Tummy distinctly bulges outwards and sags noticeably downwards.
