A disturbed biological balance can manifest itself in uncontrolled algae growth or reduced food intake by fish, among other things. Algae can cloud the water, reduce the oxygen content during the night or when it dies and thus endanger the lives of fish and plants. We have very effective algaecides to combat algae. Ideally, the causes of growth should also be reduced: too many nutrients in the water, especially excessive phosphate concentrations. Nutrients can come from various sources, such as fertilizer, soil, fish food or rainwater. Rainwater can also contain other pollutants, such as copper from gutters, which can be fatal to fish. It is therefore advisable to avoid discharging rainwater into the pond or to treat it beforehand.
We recommend the use of so-called starter bacteria, especially when restarting a filter system. These special microorganisms help to break down the ammonia, which is excreted by the fish from the protein metabolism via the gills, to ammonium and then to nitrite or nitrate. These bacteria also colonize the filter media, which is why they should never be cleaned too thoroughly or hot, so as not to damage the bacterial lawns. Nevertheless, the filter system should be cleaned and maintained regularly if necessary. Pond plants can also be planted to absorb nutrients and provide shade. Good water treatment is therefore essential for clear water and healthy fish.
