Can dogs eat pork?

In general, pork is not harmful to dogs and can be part of a balanced diet. Pork is an excellent source of protein. It contains all the essential amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own and is easily digestible. In addition, compared to other types of meat, pork contains a high proportion of linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid that is essential for dogs.

However, it is important to ensure that the pork is well-cooked or thoroughly cooked (at least 30 minutes at a temperature of at least 55 degrees Celsius, or 10 minutes at at least 70 degrees Celsius) to eliminate the so-called Aujeszky’s disease virus, also known as pseudorabies. This is a virus that is dangerous to dogs. However, this virus has not been found in domestic pigs in Germany for over 20 years. Nevertheless, caution is advised if the origin of the meat is uncertain. Therefore: Pork should only be fed to dogs after it has been thoroughly cooked.
