JBL GH ProAqua Review

A healthy pond with near-natural conditions
The correct water parameters in a pond depend on the fish stock and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it can still be contaminated. Poor water parameters can lead to diseases or algae growth in the pond. For a healthy pond with natural conditions, regular monitoring and adjustment of water parameters are essential.

For every water analysis, JBL offers water tests in the form of rapid tests or color-change tests. These determine a specific value or multiple values simultaneously. With these water tests, algae problems can be detected and negative nitrate, nitrite, potassium, and magnesium levels, etc., can be identified.

Why test?
Depending on the origin and composition of the substrate, water can contain varying amounts of alkaline earth salts. These are usually calcium and magnesium salts. The sum of calcium and magnesium ions represents the total hardness. Most fish and plants can be successfully maintained at a total hardness of approx. 8–20°dH. Nevertheless, one should strive to reduce excessively high total hardness levels through appropriate measures.

Recommended total hardness levels:

Water type Total hardness
Freshwater aquarium (community aquarium) 8–25 °dGH
Malawi and Lake Tanganyika aquarium 5–20 °dGH
Planted aquariums with few fish (aquascaping) 3–10 °dGH
Saltwater aquariums Cannot be measured with a GH test, as levels are too high. Please test calcium and magnesium separately
Ponds 6–20 °dGH

Instructions for use
IMPORTANT: When dispensing drops, always hold the dropper bottle vertically with the dropper pointing
straight down and dispense without creating bubbles. The dropper must be dry on the outside.
Storage of reagents: Store in a dry place at room temperature in the original packaging.

Special feature: JBL PRO AQUATEST GH is an easy-to-use titration test for determining total hardness in freshwater.

Procedure:

  1. Rinse the measuring vessel several times with the water to be tested.
  2. Using the included syringe, fill the measuring vessel with 5 ml of the sample water.
  3. Add the reagent drop by drop. Swirl after each drop and count the drops
until the color changes from red to green.

One drop of reagent solution corresponds to 1 degree of German total hardness (°dH), 1.25 degrees of English total hardness (°e), and 1.78 degrees of French total hardness (°fH).

Correcting deviating values:
Too low: Add JBL mineral salts.
Too high: Water softening, e.g., by using a reverse osmosis system.

Use biocides with caution. Always read the label and product information before use.

Hazard statements:
H226 Liquid and vapor are flammable.
H315 Causes skin irritation.
H319 Causes serious eye irritation.
