JBL NH4 ProAqua Ammonium Test

A healthy pond with near-natural conditions
The correct water parameters in a pond depend on the fish stock and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it can still be contaminated. Poor water parameters can lead to diseases or algae growth in the pond. For a healthy pond with natural conditions, regular monitoring and adjustment of water parameters are important.

For every water analysis, JBL offers water tests in the form of rapid tests or color-change tests. These determine a specific value or multiple values simultaneously. With these water tests, algae problems can be detected and negative nitrate, nitrite, potassium, magnesium levels, etc., can be identified.

Why test?
The breakdown or mineralization process of all organic substances in the aquarium and pond proceeds through the following stages: proteins > ammonium > nitrite > nitrate.
By measuring these stages, conclusions can be drawn about the “functioning” of the aquarium or pond system. If the ammonium or nitrite level is too high, this can lead to a disruption in the bacterial balance. As a rule, ammonium will not be detectable in a well-maintained aquarium with an efficient biological filter or in a properly designed garden pond. Ammonium is an important plant nutrient and is normally not toxic to fish. However, depending on the pH value, the ammonium ion can produce ammonia, which is toxic to fish.

Water Type Recommended Ammonium Levels
Freshwater aquarium (community aquarium) < 0.25 mg/l
Malawi and Tanganyika Lake aquarium < 0.25 mg/l
Planted aquariums with few fish (aquascaping) < 0.25 mg/L
Marine aquariums 0–0.25 mg/l
Ponds < 0.1 mg/l

Procedure:

  1. Rinse both test tubes several times with the water to be tested.
  2. Using the included syringe, fill both test tubes with 5 ml of sample water each.
  3. Add 4 drops of Reagent 1 to one of the test tubes and mix by swirling. Then add 4 drops of Reagent 2, mix, and finally add 5 drops of Reagent 3 and mix. Let stand for 15 minutes until the color has fully developed.
  4. Place both test tubes in the gray comparator block: the tube with added reagents at the smooth end of the comparator block, the tube with untreated sample water (blank sample) at the notched end.
  5. Place the comparator block with the two test tubes on the color chart so that the notch faces the values, and slide it along the color chart until the color of the sample with added reagent matches the color below the blank sample as closely as possible.
  6. Read the ammonium content at the notch on the comparator.

Correction of deviating values:
Too low: The value should always be as low as possible.
Too high: Use a suitable biological filter and add JBL
cleaning bacteria. As an immediate measure in the aquarium, perform a partial water change of approx. 50%. The pH value of the fresh water must under no circumstances be higher than that in the aquarium.
Reduce the fish stock if necessary.

Use biocides with caution. Always read the label and product information before use.

Hazard statements:
336: May cause drowsiness or dizziness.
H315: Causes skin irritation.
H225: Liquid and vapor are highly flammable.
P102: Keep out of reach of children.
P501a: Dispose of contents/container in accordance with local regulations.
