JBL NO3 ProAqua Nitrate Test
A healthy pond with natural conditions
The correct water parameters in a pond depend on the fish stock and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it can still be contaminated. Poor water parameters can lead to diseases or algae growth in the pond. For a healthy pond with natural conditions, regular monitoring and adjustment of water parameters are important.
For every water analysis, JBL offers water tests in the form of rapid tests or color-change tests. These determine a specific value or multiple values simultaneously. With these water tests, algae problems can be detected and negative nitrate, nitrite, potassium, magnesium levels, etc., can be identified.
Why test:
The breakdown of all organic substances (food and plant debris, fish waste) in the aquarium and pond occurs through the stages protein ► ammonium ► nitrite ► nitrate. Certain bacteria are responsible for this process.
By measuring the individual intermediate stages—ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate—conclusions can be drawn about how well the system is functioning.
Nitrate is the end product of mineralization in the pond and is non-toxic to fish even at relatively high concentrations; however, it has a detrimental effect on plant growth and the well-being of some fish species.
Excessively high nitrate levels also promote unwanted algae growth if phosphate is present in the water in addition to nitrate.
| Water Type | Recommended nitrite levels |
|---|---|
| Freshwater aquarium (community aquarium) | 0–50 mg/l |
| Malawi and Tanganyika aquarium | 0–50 mg/L |
| Planted aquariums with few fish (aquascaping) | 10–30 mg/l |
| Marine aquariums | 0–20 mg/l |
| Ponds | 0–10 mg/l |
Procedure:
- Rinse both test tubes several times with the water to be tested.
- Using the included syringe, fill both test tubes with 10 ml of sample water each.
- Add 1 large measuring spoon (wide end of the included double spoon) of Reagent 1 and then 6 drops of Reagent 2 to one of the test tubes. Close the test tube and shake vigorously until only traces of a gray powder remain. Let stand for 10 minutes until the color has fully developed.
- Place both test tubes in the gray comparator block: the tube with the added reagent at the smooth end of the comparator block, the tube with untreated sample water (blank sample) at the notched end.
- Place the comparator block with the two test tubes on the color chart so that the notch faces the values, and slide it along the color chart until the color of the sample with added reagent matches the color below the blank sample as closely as possible.
- Read the nitrate content at the notch on the comparator.
Correction of deviating values:
Too low: Add nitrogen-containing fertilizers from the JBL ProScape series
. Too high: Perform regular partial water changes and filter using special JBL nitrate-reducing filter media. If necessary, increase the number of plants or reduce the number of fish. For ponds, ensure there is sufficient substrate for plants.
Use biocides with caution. Always read the label and product information before use.
