JBL PO4 ProAqua Phosphate Sensitive Test

A healthy pond with near-natural conditions
The correct water parameters in a pond depend on the fish stock and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it can still be polluted. Poor water parameters can lead to diseases or algae growth in the pond. For a healthy pond with near-natural conditions, regular monitoring and adjustment of water parameters are important.

For every water analysis, JBL offers water tests in the form of rapid tests or color-change tests. These determine a specific value or multiple values simultaneously. With these water tests, algae problems can be detected and negative nitrate, nitrite, potassium, magnesium levels, etc., can be identified.

Why test:
Phosphate is an important plant nutrient. In natural waters free of pollution, the phosphate concentration is about 0.01 mg/l and about 0.07 mg/l in seawater. Plants and algae have adapted to this limited supply of phosphate and can therefore survive on very small amounts.
Phosphate enters the water mainly through the digestive processes of fish and via uneaten food. Especially in ponds with high fish stocking densities, phosphate levels can reach values that are sometimes 100 times higher than natural levels.
Some water treatment plants also add phosphates to tap water to prevent lime scale buildup and corrosion in the piping system.

In garden ponds, phosphate input from pollen in the spring or from garden fertilizers in the surrounding area should not be overlooked. As a result of the unnaturally high nutrient supply, algae multiply at an explosive rate. Algae can store significant amounts of phosphate and thus continue to grow unabated for some time even after the phosphate level has been reduced. The sooner the rising phosphate level is detected, the more likely it is that an algae bloom can be prevented.

Water Type Recommended nitrite levels
Freshwater aquarium (community aquarium) 0–0.4 mg/l
Malawi and Tanganyika Lake aquarium 0–0.4 mg/L
Planted aquariums with few fish (aquascaping) 0.1–1.5 mg/L
Marine aquariums 0–0.1 mg/L
Ponds <0.05 mg/l

Procedure:

  1. Rinse both test tubes several times with the water to be tested.
  2. Using the included syringe, fill both test tubes with 10 ml of sample water each.
  3. Add 1 small measuring spoon (narrow end of the included double spoon) of Reagent 1 to one of the test tubes, close with the lid, and shake until the powder has dissolved. Add 10 drops of Reagent 2, mix by swirling, and let stand for 10 minutes until the color has fully developed.
  4. Place both test tubes in the gray comparator block: the tube with the added reagent at the smooth end of the comparator block, the tube with untreated sample water (blank sample) at the notched end.
  5. Place the comparator block with the two test tubes on the color chart so that the notch faces the values, and slide it along the color chart until the color of the sample with added reagent matches the color below the blank sample as closely as possible.
  6. Read the phosphate content at the notch on the comparator.

Correction of deviating values:
Too low: Add phosphate-containing fertilizers from the JBL ProScape series.
Too high: Reduce using JBL Ph

Use biocides with caution. Always read the label and product information before use.

Hazard statements:
H302 Harmful if swallowed.
H314 Causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage
. H335 May cause respiratory irritation
