TRM Chelated Copper & Vitamin E
TRM's Chelated Copper products have been formulated to make copper available to the horse in an easily absorbable form, combining the trace element copper with amino acids. This process increases the absorption of copper through the intestinal wall into the horse's body. This product group is particularly valuable for the feeding of broodmares and young animals.
Copper plays a role in bone development and the maintenance of elastic connective tissue. TRM's CHELATED COPPER is the best type of copper supplement for horses. CHELATED COPPER is an organic compound in which the metal ion (Cu++) in the compound is surrounded by and bound to organic material (here: amino acids). Copper must be present in a neutral and stable form so that it can be absorbed.
Inhibiting factors for copper absorption from natural food (grass, hay, grain):
- pH value of the soil: too acidic or alkaline
- Excess zinc
- Excess phosphate (pollutants from fertilizers)
- Excess vitamin C
- leached soil
- Moisture content of the soil
- Maturity and/or type of crop grown
Disorders due to copper deficiency
- Blood: Anemia is notorious in animals. Copper is needed as an enzymatic component for the formation of red blood cells.
- Blood vessels: copper deficiency can lead to tears in the aorta or main artery of the uterus, especially in old mares after foaling.
- Bones: Bone abnormalities occur in almost all animals with copper deficiency, especially in young animals.
- Nerve cells: Demyelination (degenerative destruction; editor's note) is a feature of copper deficiency.
- Hair and coat: Dullness and roughness in hair and coat.
- Copper is essential for life. It is required for at least 12 known metalloenzymes.
