How do you know if your pet has Dental problems?
If your dog or cat has bad breath, this is often one of the first signs that something might be wrong with their teeth. If the odour occurs suddenly and for no apparent reason, the affected animal should be examined by a vet to check whether there is a serious illness behind it. If there is no illness, plaque and tartar are usually the culprits. The teeth should be checked regularly. Dental plaque and tartar are often mainly present on the back molars and canines. Gum inflammation can be recognized by a reddened gum line. If the gums start to bleed easily when you touch them, you should definitely consult a vet, as it is often necessary to remove the tartar thoroughly under anesthetic. Afterwards, however, you can do a few things to keep the teeth healthy and clean in the long term and prevent bad breath from returning.
How can you protect your pet from Dental problems?
Intensive chewing can help prevent plaque and tartar build-up. However, this alone is often not enough. The best prevention for our pets is also brushing their teeth with a toothbrush or finger stick. In addition, special feed, water or feed additives can help to change the climate in the mouth so that less tartar is formed.
What do you need to bear in mind when brushing your pet's teeth?
It is best to brush their teeth daily. Get your pet used to it as early as possible and teach it to tolerate tooth brushing with a lot of patience and a gentle approach. Start with a finger stick and massage the gums and teeth with gentle pressure - very briefly at first, then longer and longer.
