JBL NO2 ProAqua Nitrite Test
A healthy pond with natural conditions
The correct water parameters in a pond depend on the fish population and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it can still be contaminated. Poor water parameters can lead to diseases or algae growth in the pond. For a healthy pond with natural conditions, regular monitoring and adjustment of water parameters are important.
For every water analysis, JBL offers water tests in the form of rapid tests or color-change tests. These determine a specific value or multiple values simultaneously. With these water tests, algae problems can be detected and negative nitrate, nitrite, potassium, magnesium levels, etc., can be identified.
Why test:
Nitrite is produced when bacteria break down protein and ammonium. It is normally converted into non-toxic nitrate. In aquarium and pond water, nitrite (NO2) should not be detectable. If nitrite is detectable, however, the bacterial breakdown process is disrupted, and at concentrations of 0.4 mg/l or higher, it becomes dangerous or even fatal for fish, as nitrite blocks oxygen transport in the animals’ blood. Water changes and good bacterial starters such as JBL Denitrol or JBL BactoPond can help.
| Water type | Recommended nitrite levels |
|---|---|
| Freshwater aquarium (community aquarium) | 0–0.2 mg/l |
| Malawi and Lake Tanganyika aquarium | 0–0.2 mg/L |
| Planted aquariums with few fish (aquascaping) | 0–0.2 mg/L |
| Marine aquariums | 0–0.2 mg/L |
| Ponds | 0–0.2 mg/L |
Special note for garden ponds:
As temperatures drop seasonally, the activity of the cleaning bacteria also decreases. If food with too high a protein content is fed at this time, it can lead to a dangerous rise in nitrite levels. At low temperatures, it is therefore particularly important to use food with a high energy content (fat content) but low protein, such as winter food.
Procedure:
- Rinse both test tubes several times with the water to be tested.
- Using the included syringe, fill both test tubes with 5 ml of sample water each.
- Add 5 drops of Reagent 1 and then 5 drops of Reagent 2 to one of the test tubes; mix by swirling after each addition of reagent. Let stand for 5 minutes until the color has fully developed.
- Place both test tubes in the gray comparator block: the tube with added reagents at the smooth end of the comparator block, the tube with untreated sample water (blank sample) at the notched end.
- Place the comparator block with the two test tubes on the color chart so that the notch faces the values, and slide it along the color chart until the color of the sample with added reagent matches the color below the blank sample as closely as possible.
- Read the nitrite level at the notch on the comparator.
Correction of deviating values:
Too low: The value should always be as low as possible.
Too high: Use a suitable biological filter and add JBL cleaning bacteria. As an immediate measure in the aquarium, perform a partial water change of approx. 50%. In the long term, possibly reduce the fish stock.
Use biocides with caution. Always read the label and product information before use.
