almapharm Colactiv has been specially developed to support natural intestinal peristalsis and promote regular defecation when there is a temporary or permanent increased need for certain nutrients and active ingredients. Such a need may exist in particular in dogs and cats that are prone to constipation.

In addition to sufficient exercise, a fiber-rich diet is crucial for maintaining normal intestinal function. This is the only way to provide the large intestine with the necessary stretching stimuli that stimulate peristalsis. At the same time, the fibers ensure that fluid remains bound in the faeces and the gliding ability is increased.

The substances known today as dietary fibres, formerly known as roughage, consist mainly of non-starch polysaccharides, which are neither digested nor absorbed in the small intestine. They help to increase stool volume, regulate the fluid balance in the large intestine and promote a healthy intestinal microbiota.

Depending on the proportion of lignin and cellulose, their fermentability in the rectum by the natural bacterial flora varies. Lactulose, for example, which is obtained from lactose (milk sugar) by isomerization and consists of a molecule of d-galactose and fructose, is particularly easy to ferment.
