Hooves support the activity of the blood circulation in the horse. The large surface area of the hoof is associated with active blood circulation. With every step, the surface of the hoof expands and thus activates optimum blood circulation. Harmful substances and metabolic residues are excreted via the newly formed horn, which can be recognized by the rings or discolorations in the horn. The hoof with its corium is therefore a vital and metabolically active organ.

With a functioning hoof mechanism, the hoof metabolism is in balance. If the hoof mechanism is impaired, the blood accumulates and can no longer support the activity of the blood circulation in the body. If the hoof mechanism is restricted, which is accompanied by reduced blood circulation, more harmful substances and metabolic residues have to be removed from the body via the liver and kidneys.
