Grain-Free Cat Food: What's on the label and what it really means

The information on food packaging can be confusing at first glance. However, if you know the most important terms, you can quickly evaluate the quality of a food yourself.

Grain-free does not mean carbohydrate-free

Even food without grain needs an ingredient to hold everything together – especially dry food. Instead of wheat or corn, you will often find potatoes, peas, or sweet potatoes on the ingredient list. "Grain-free" therefore does not automatically mean "carbohydrate-free". A quick look at the overall composition will help you estimate the total carbohydrate content. Also watch out for hidden sugar. Sometimes it is added as caramel to make the food look nicer or to improve the taste. High-quality food does not need such additives.

How much meat is really in it?

The meat content is crucial. However, do not let a large percentage on the front blind you. What is important is what is on the ingredient list. An "open declaration" shows you exactly which parts of the animal were processed. Terms like "fresh chicken" or "lamb heart" are a clear sign of quality, while "meat and animal by-products" can mean anything.

When cat food becomes a problem: Intolerances and allergies

Not every cat tolerates everything. Persistent itching on the head and neck, a dull coat, bald spots, or constant diarrhea can be signs that your cat does not tolerate its food.

Since these symptoms can also have other causes, a visit to the vet is the first and most important step to provide clarity.

Your vet can help you find the trigger. Often it is not the grain, but a specific type of meat like beef or chicken. Here is the difference between the dietary concepts:

  • Grain-free cat food is the right choice for a proven grain intolerance or for cats with a generally sensitive digestion.
  • Hypoallergenic cat food goes one step further and is intended for true allergies. It contains either only a single, rare protein source (e.g., horse or insects) that the immune system does not yet know, or proteins that are broken down so small that the body no longer recognizes them as allergens.

A carbohydrate-reduced, grain-free diet can also support weight control in cats prone to being overweight. Since obesity is the main risk factor for feline diabetes, you are making an important contribution to your cat's health with the right diet.

Healthy cat food without grain: Wet, dry, or both?

Whether wet food, dry food, or a mix – the best choice depends on your cat's preferences and your daily routine.

Grain-free wet food

Wet food comes closest to a cat's natural prey. With its high moisture content of around 80%, it compensates for the fact that cats naturally drink very little – a major plus for healthy kidneys and urinary tracts.

Grain-free dry food

Dry food is practical and has a long shelf life. However, since it contains very little moisture, you must ensure that your cat always has enough fresh water available.

Grain-free food for kittens

Growing kittens need significantly more energy, proteins, and nutrients than adult cats. Special kitten food is tailored exactly to these needs and supports the development of strong bones and muscles.

Grain-free snacks

If your cat is on a special diet, the treats must also match. An elimination diet only works if the occasional rewards are also free of problematic ingredients. Fortunately, there is a large selection of suitable, grain-free snacks.

Overview of our top grain-free cat food brands

In our online shop, you will find a carefully curated selection of high-quality, grain-free cat food:

  • Farmina N&D: Offers a wide and species-appropriate selection with the Prime (chicken/lamb), Ocean (fish), and functional Quinoa recipes.
  • Leonardo: Known for its grain-free line and convenient pouches that allow for easy portioning.
  • MjAMjAM: Considered a specialist in wet food with a very high meat content and an impressive variety of flavors.
  • Lily’s Kitchen: Impresses with high-quality and carefully crafted recipes for grain-free wet and dry food.
  • Orijen: Consistently relies on grain-free recipes characterized by an exceptionally high proportion of animal ingredients.
  • MAC’s: Offers a large and diverse range of grain-free wet and dry food for different needs.

How to make the food transition a breeze

Cats are often skeptical of anything new in their bowl. Therefore, transition the food slowly, ideally over a period of 7 to 14 days. Mix a little more of the new food into the old one every day, starting with a teaspoon. This allows the digestion to adapt, and your cat gets used to the new taste. And very importantly: If your cat completely refuses the new food, do not force it to starve. In cats, this can quickly lead to a dangerous fatty liver.

    • Should cats be fed a grain-free diet?

A grain-free diet is not mandatory for every cat, but it strongly aligns with their natural, meat-based diet. It is particularly recommended for known intolerances or sensitive digestion.

    • Which cat food contains no grain?

Look for the "grain-free" declaration on the packaging. Brands like Farmina N&D, Orijen, MjAMjAM, or MAC’s offer a wide range of cat foods without grain.

    • Why should there be no grain in cat food?

As carnivores, cats are specialized in utilizing animal protein and can only digest carbohydrates to a limited extent. A high proportion of grain can lead to digestive problems or trigger intolerances in sensitive animals.

    • What are the symptoms of grain intolerance in cats?

Typical symptoms include itching, especially on the head and neck, skin problems, a dull coat, as well as digestive disorders such as diarrhea, flatulence, or vomiting. An accurate diagnosis should always be made by a veterinarian.

    • High meat content cat food: How high should the meat content be?

A high meat content is crucial for a species-appropriate diet. More important than the sheer percentage, however, is an open declaration that describes exactly which types of meat and animal parts were used.

    • What is the healthiest cat food for cats?

The healthiest food is always individually tailored to the cat's needs. Generally, it should contain a high proportion of high-quality animal protein, all essential nutrients like taurine, and as few unnecessary fillers as possible.

    • Which high-quality cat food is recommended by veterinarians?

What is good cat food? Based on veterinary experience, we recommend food that is tailored to the individual needs of the cat (age, activity level, health status). A transparent, open declaration and the absence of artificial preservatives and colors are important quality features. • Is grain-free cat food automatically low in carbohydrates?

No, not necessarily. Instead of grain, alternative carbohydrate sources like potatoes, peas, or sweet potatoes are often used. A look at the overall composition is therefore important to estimate the carbohydrate content.

    • How do I transition my cat to grain-free food?

Gradually mix more and more of the new food into the usual food over a period of 7 to 14 days. This allows your cat's digestion to slowly adapt to the new composition and minimizes acceptance problems.
