Fodder Medicus Elm Bark (Slippery Elm Bark)

Supplementary feed for dogs & cats

Benefits:

  • Supports the stomach function
  • rich in tannins and bitter substances
  • mucilage-forming
  • from the American red elm
  • for smacking & eating grass

Elm bark has been used for thousands of years as a natural remedy to support stomach function. Elm bark powder is obtained from the inner bark of American elm trees by drying it for months. In addition to dogs, cats and ferrets also benefit from the herbal ingredients of the powder. In addition to bitter substances and tannins, elm bark primarily contains mucilage, which produces a slimy substance on contact with water. The ground bark is therefore mixed with water for daily use.

The resulting mucilage is very suitable for supporting stomach function. It lines the stomach as a protective layer and thus supports the gastric mucosa in its digestive function.

Areas of application:

  • Stomach and intestinal function
  • Stomach acidity (smacking, prayer posture, eating grass)
  • Digestion

Feeding recommendation for dogs and cats per day:

Dogs under 15 kg 5 ml of the mixed mixture 2-3 times a day
Dogs over 15 kg 5-10 ml of the mixed mixture 2-3 times a day
Cats 3-5 ml of the mixed mixture 2-3 times a day

Please increase the amount slowly. Ideally administer 30 minutes before feeding. Medication and mineral powder should not be given in conjunction with elm bark.

Feeding instructions:
mix 2 level teaspoons (= 3.8 to 4 g) with approx. 100 ml water in a saucepan. Then bring to the boil briefly over a medium heat and simmer for approx. 1 minute at the lowest heat until the mixture thickens slightly and starts to form streaks. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool. If the resulting brown slime is too thick, add a tablespoon of water until the desired consistency is reached.

Either offer the slime lukewarm on a plate to lick off or give it directly into the mouth using a syringe (without a needle).

It is better accepted if prepared fresh daily, but the slime can also be kept in the fridge for 2-3 days. It is best stored there in a syringe. Allow to warm to room temperature before administering.
