The immune system is a complex system of different cells that ensures pathogens do not enter and multiply in our pets' bodies. The interplay of individual defense reactions is a constantly ongoing process where both an insufficient and an excessive reaction must be prevented to keep the organism healthy.
When should the immune system be supported?
Dogs and cats in good condition generally have strong immune defenses and therefore rarely get sick. However, various factors can lead to a weakening of the immune system. Such negative influences can include: an unbalanced diet, psychological or physical stress situations, extreme temperatures, toxins, certain medications, chronic illnesses, or heavy shedding.
If you notice that your dog or cat is frequently unwell or suffers from a chronic illness or a tumor, if your pet develops more and more health problems with increasing age, or is recovering from a serious illness, then it may be beneficial to support their immune system with a complementary food. It also makes sense to proactively strengthen their immune defenses when a particular strain is expected, e.g., when intense physical exertion or a prolonged stressful situation is imminent.
How can the immune system of dogs and cats be supported?
Optimal care and a balanced diet for pets are the basic prerequisites for strong immune defenses. In particular, high-quality food adapted to their age and living conditions provides the body with all the nutrients and vitamins needed to guarantee a well-functioning immune system.
When special challenges arise, various options are available to support the body's own defenses.
Covering increased nutrient and vitamin needs
An increased intake of certain nutrients can help cover an elevated need. These include, for example, antioxidants like Vitamin E, zinc, as well as specific fatty acids and certain protein building blocks that the body requires for immune defense.
Activation of the immune system
Alpha- and beta-glucans are cell wall structures from yeasts or fungi that activate the immune system by binding to specific receptors on phagocytes, thereby stimulating the formation of further immune cells.
Propolis
Propolis is a natural product known for centuries, produced by bees and containing up to 200 different substances. It has a direct antibiotic, antiviral, and antifungal effect and can additionally strengthen the body's own defenses.
Medicinal plants
There are many medicinal plants that can alleviate the symptoms of diseases or shorten their duration. The exact mode of action of these plants is often not yet fully scientifically clarified, and the need for research, especially on the interplay of various ingredients with the immune system, remains high.
Algae such as Spirulina or Chlorella are rich in high-quality proteins, Vitamin B12, provitamin A, minerals, unsaturated fatty acids, and secondary plant compounds like chlorophyll or phycocyanin. They can thus cover an increased need for nutrients and simultaneously directly stimulate the body's own defenses.
Alkamides from purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) and cannabinoids from hemp bind to specific receptors of immune cells and can, by regulating the release of cytokines, have both stimulating and modulating effects on the immune system.
A variety of food additives for strengthening immune defenses are available today. If you are unsure which might be suitable for your pet, ask your treating veterinarian or our veterinary team for the optimal product.
